Just $1.99 for the next few days, this fantasy has us mesmerized!

The City of Brass, by S. A. Chakraborty

We read the blurb, read the sample, and fell in love. At $1.99, we bought one for each of us. And then we bought one for Mom, too. It reminds us a bit of Laini Taylor’s Strange the Dreamer, even though it’s completely different. It’s also reminiscent of Helene Wecker’s The Golem and the Jinni, although it’s different from that one, too. We love so many authors, but there are few who can paint a complete scene without explanations. The right dialog, the right details (two or three at most, thrown in casually), and the world comes alive.

We can’t wait to dig into this one, and we couldn’t wait to share it with you!

A free fantasy for your weekend! With more giveaways coming soon!

Bound, by Kirsten Weiss

You get a book… and you get a book…

When it comes to books, it doesn’t get better than free! But we don’t recommend just any free book. (Most of the time, you get what you pay for.) So we look for titles that actually excite us. Solid writing. Good reviews. An interesting premise. And we try to cross the sci-fi/fantasy spectrum. Dystopian science one day, cozy mysteries the next. This one’s a contemporary witchy mystery with a bit of romance, in the vein of Practical Magic. We downloaded ours as soon as we found it. And then we shared it with you!

The Witch’s Vacuum Cleaner and Other Stories, by Terry Pratchett

“The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.” —Terry Pratchett

We’ve been dying to find a Terry Pratchett sale! One of the greatest names in fantasy humor, Terry Pratchett spent an entire lifetime writing. These particular stories were penned back at the beginning, when he was just 17. He honed them a bit for this anthology, but not much. Such was the depth of his talent. The collection is just $1.99 through the end of September, and we snapped it up the second we found it. We’ve made it a lifetime quest to keep our minds open—making sure they’ll have room for stories like these.

Some Assistance Required, by C.L. Ogilvie

Glenda Melner has a mother who (probably) can’t remember her name, a new lawyer boss who happens to be a vampire, and a best friend who’s convinced Glen won’t survive her first week on the job. The firm comes complete with a shapeshifter who can’t shift, a fairy who can’t fly, a hyperborean who can’t be bothered to give a mere human the time of day, and vampire-hating protestors who lob garlic at the lobby. Not to mention the orc at the security desk.

Soon Glenda is embroiled in a hot supernatural mess, and I loved every minute of it. The book is a standalone, but I wish it weren’t because I adored the main character and the entire ensemble cast. I would buy another book about them all in a second!!!

Spirit Legacy, by E.E. Holmes

With more than 600 reviews on Goodreads and a 4.6 rating, Spirit Legacy by E.E. Holmes is our deal pick of the day. It looks a little bit like Ghost Whisperer (with a rougher childhood) and a whole lot like awesome. (We’re getting hints from reader reviewers of strong character development, and we love well developed characters.)

We picked it up and then got back to hanging out here at Dragoncon. Someone find us a Starbucks. We’re gonna need it!

Welcome back to Pern! New book in just 5 weeks! (Aka I beg for books and have strange interactions at the post office.)

Remember that authorAnne McCaffrey? The one who made me (Erin) decide to become an author? The one I couldn’t talk to without sobbing?

(You might know her better as the Anne McCaffrey who’s in the Science Fiction Hall of Famethe SFFWA Grand Master, winner of both the Hugo and Nebula Awards, winner of the Robert A. Heinlein award for lifetime achievement as a fantasy and science fiction author… Right, that Anne McCaffrey. But I’m sure the bit about what she means to me personally is on a card in the SF Hall of Fame somewhere.)

Okay, so her daughter, Gigi McCaffrey, is releasing a new Pern book in OctoberDragon’s Codeand I’m so excited I can’t stand it. (Imagine a thirty-minute pause here while I tried and failed to find a gif showing how profoundly excited I am. I’m not a gif connoisseur, apparently. I did, however, spell ‘connoisseur’ correctly on the first go, which surprised me and made me feel a little better about the whole gif thing.)

Norse Mythology, by Neil Gaiman

We listened to the audiobook. Together. We don’t do that a lot, but now, having heard it, we find it hard to imagine this particular book any other way. Neil Gaiman’s dry delivery of Loki’s cleverness, Thor’s bull-headed simplicity, and the narrator’s scathing one-liners had us laughing so loudly that we had to rewind it more than once.

The Divine Cities Trilogy, by Robert Jackson Bennett

Do sweeping sagas and epic worlds light your reading fire? If so, this one’s for you. It’s dark. Gritty. Complex. Think Dostoevsky writing modern fantasy, with some seriously intense world building. Normally $25.99, all three books are bundled together for just $2.99, for a limited time!
