Audiobooks in a modern world. Has storytelling come full circle?

Audiobooks in a modern world. Has storytelling come full circle?

What do you think about audiobooks?

We resisted them for a long time—partly out of habit, and partly out of the idea that listening to an audiobook isn’t reading. It’s letting someone tell you a story.

And then it hit us. That’s the best thing about them.

Books didn’t come first in the evolution of story. Narration did: the mythologies we dreamed up by firelight in the caves of our ancestors; the fairytales we invented to pass long, winter nights; the magical hopes and dreams we shared beneath the harvest moon.

The magic of books came later, when we began to write them down. But books weren’t the first magic.

Just $1.99 each for the entire Wayward Pines trilogy! The sci-fi mystery thriller behind the TV series!

Just $1.99 each for the entire Wayward Pines trilogy! The sci-fi mystery thriller behind the TV series!

Pines, by Blake Crouch

Did you catch Wayward Pines when it was on television? If you did, what did you think? Erin loved season one (“Omg, so awesome!”), and now the books are all on sale! From now through the end of September, all three ebooks in the Wayward Pines trilogy are just $1.99 each. We love sales like this, with plenty of time to buy the first one for just $1.99 and read it, to see whether we want to snap up the other two while they’re still discounted.

We checked Netflix, by the way, and Wayward Pines isn’t on there. It’s on Amazon, but it’s not free. (Bummer.) Hulu won’t let you search anything unless you sign up (not cool!) so we don’t know about that one. Anyone want to search that for us and let us know?

Insightful and amazingly thorough, So Say We All is the definitive (if unofficial) history of Battlestar Galactica.

So Say We All, by Edward Gross & Mark A. Altman

The sheer amount of information about Battlestar Galactica (BSG) contained in this one volume is unreal. There are soooooo many interview snippets, covering everything from the show’s TV movie beginnings, to the behind-the-scenes budget problems, to the way the ships were built and filmed, to the chimps in the daggit suit. And *then* it covers everything about the reboot, which I loved just as much.

Warcross, by Marie Lu

We love this read, and for *today only* the ebook is massively on sale! We reviewed it a couple months ago. Our bottom line? “A gaming thriller with a strong romantic subplot, Warcross is an engaging read that left us eager for the next installment!” From the moment we saw it on sale, we couldn’t wait to share the deal with you!

(Don’t forget! The second book in the series, Wildcard, comes out September 18!)

50% off this sci-fi thriller! A million-copy bestseller, now in development by 20th Century Fox!

CyberStorm, by Matthew Mather

Picked this up tonight after finding the deal and reading the sample. The entire sample. It’s rare that a book pulls us in that hard. The chapters are labelled by date, jumping forward without tedious fillers. November 25. December 8. But there’s no skimping on character development. It’s just brilliantly tight and efficient.

In a few short pages we love the hero. Love the kids. Feeling ambiguous about Lauren. (As we’re supposed to.) Love the neighbors. Except Richard, that is. Truly despising Richard. Any writer who can make us feel this much about so many people in so little time deserves at least one read. At this price, this is the one.

Wonder Woman: Warbringer, by Leigh Bardugo

Leigh Bardugo is one of the most popular YA authors writing today. Her Six of Crows was a New York Times bestseller, and now she’s turned her attention to one of Erin’s favorite superheroes of all time. It almost goes without saying that this was also a New York Times bestseller, straight out of the gate. It’s only $1.99 today, so don’t miss it!

83% off Gears of War Aspho Fields – the military sci-fi prequel to the blockbuster games!

83% off Gears of War Aspho Fields – the military sci-fi prequel to the blockbuster games!

Gears of War Aspho Fields, by Karen Traviss

$1.99 Kindle Sale ($11.99)

Gaming. Yeah, we’ve dabbled. From Tuesday raids in World of Warcraft to Friday clan nights in Call of Duty, there’s nothing like fighting the good fight with 5 to 40 of your best friends chilling in voice chat. But if you watched any of the E3 broadcasts this year, you’ll know there are few fandoms as enthusiastic as the Gears of War crowd. Gears 5, Gears Pop!, Gears Tactics… the screams just kept coming. Gears readers will be glad to know the franchise is producing books as fast as it is gaming titles. If not faster.

Aspho Fields is the official prequel, which has us pretty stoked. We’ve always been suckers for backstory. Action and danger are so much more powerful when you’re invested in the characters, and that’s just as true for games as it is for books. Imagine how much richer the gaming experience would be if we went into it knowing the characters inside and out already. How much more thrilling the victories, and how much more heart wrenching the losses. Sounds intense, right? We think so, too, and now’s our chance to find out.

Pick up Gears of War Aspho Fields for just $1.99 for a limited time!

Altered Carbon only $2.99 – the book, and our take on the Netflix series

Altered Carbon, by Richard K. Morgan

$2.99 Kindle Sale ($11.99)

We discovered this story through the Netflix series, Altered Carbon, which is probably different from the book in a lot of ways. (Isn’t it always!) Still, we were impressed by the series, and we fully expect to feel the same way about the book–a New York Times bestseller–which we just bought for less than the price of a cup of coffee. (We might not live in the age of immortality yet, but you sure can’t beat the entertainment.)

But Wait! Are There MORE Hogwarts Mystery Easter Eggs???

Guys! So, we got this comment on our Hogwarts Mystery Easter eggs post today…

I think I found another Easter egg: in the list (of who has collected how many house points) there’s a very special name: Chloe Price. It could be an allusion to “Life is Strange”.

And it got us thinking…

Are there secret Easter egg names from other fandoms hidden in the game?
