A free sci-fi with a fascinating set of reviews! Can an adult sci-fi title have a young MC?

A free sci-fi with a fascinating set of reviews! Can an adult sci-fi title have a young MC?

Transmission, by Morgan Rice

At long last, SETI picks up a verified alien transmission. They’re coming. For real. And the only clue to deciphering their message lies in the unique brain of a dying 13-year-old boy…

We always scan reviews and read a bit before we recommend anything, and the reviews on this one are fascinating. We love the premise, but some people seem upset that the protagonist is 13. They think the book should be listed as YA for that reason alone. What do you think? Does a young protagonist automatically make a book into a YA read? Or is it possible for an adult title to have an adolescent MC? Have you ever read a YA book that should have been in the adult section? Or an adult book that should have been listed as YA?

Tell us what you think on Twitter!

Welcome back to Pern! New book in just 5 weeks! (Aka I beg for books and have strange interactions at the post office.)

Welcome back to Pern! New book in just 5 weeks! (Aka I beg for books and have strange interactions at the post office.)

Remember that authorAnne McCaffrey? The one who made me (Erin) decide to become an author? The one I couldn’t talk to without sobbing?

(You might know her better as the Anne McCaffrey who’s in the Science Fiction Hall of Famethe SFFWA Grand Master, winner of both the Hugo and Nebula Awards, winner of the Robert A. Heinlein award for lifetime achievement as a fantasy and science fiction author… Right, that Anne McCaffrey. But I’m sure the bit about what she means to me personally is on a card in the SF Hall of Fame somewhere.)

Okay, so her daughter, Gigi McCaffrey, is releasing a new Pern book in OctoberDragon’s Codeand I’m so excited I can’t stand it. (Imagine a thirty-minute pause here while I tried and failed to find a gif showing how profoundly excited I am. I’m not a gif connoisseur, apparently. I did, however, spell ‘connoisseur’ correctly on the first go, which surprised me and made me feel a little better about the whole gif thing.)

$0.99 sale on scifi gaming fiction! (For fans of Ready Player One or Warcross.)

Nexis, by A. L. Davroe

We don’t remember seeing this cover before today, but that’s what we love most about book sales. The new gems we discover! This one’s a virtual reality gaming read, in the vein of Ready Player One or Warcross, with added themes of genetically altered aristocrats, and a main character who’s just a plain-old unaltered human, muddling through life like the rest of us.

Reviewers are saying it’s more than they expected, and we can’t wait to try it. At $0.99 instead of the usual $5.99, we couldn’t resist!

Open Minds, by Susan Kaye Quinn

Humanity of the future is telepathic. But some people are born different. The least powerful are zeros, hated because their minds are closed off. The most powerful are jackers, feared for their abilities. Kira is a zero — an outcast, and completely alone. But if they knew what she was thinking, things would be so much worse.

Easily in our top ten favorite books ever, on sale for only $2.99!

Ender’s Game, by Orson Scott Card

$2.99 Kindle Sale ($7.99)

Some days, we spend a lot of time searching through book deals (okay, okay… shopping) before we find the perfect one for the blog. But today, we found Ender’s Game about three seconds into our browsing, and that was it. No need to look any further. The writing is superb, but direct. (More like Hemingway than like Rothfuss, although Card loved Name of the Wind as much as we did.) It’s subtle, and it’s smart–profound, but never preachy.

The plot moves at a steady clip, but the character development is brilliant. In fact, Ender himself might be our favorite thing about it.
