A Well-crafted Global-blackout Thriller

Adam is 16. He’s a good student. He’s building an ultralight with his dad in the garage. He likes a girl he’s too nervous to talk to. And then every computer in the world goes dark. Permanently.

What’s a guy to do?

If his mom’s a police officer and his next door neighbor is some kind of retired government operative (spies tend to be vague about their personal history), he fortifies his suburban neighborhood and turns it into the last bastion of sanity amidst a dying civilization. Obviously.

If that sounds like an unrealistic plot line, here’s the crazy thing: It isn’t. Eric Walters’ brilliance as a writer is that he shows you that it isn’t–drawing you in, page by page, while his characters go through the slow burn of realizing that everything might not be okay.

My Lost Brothers: The Untold Story by the Yarnell Hill Fire’s Lone Survivor — Brendan McDonough

Gripping & Inspirational

I felt drawn to this book because I’ve been through wildland firefighter training, so I have a ton of respect for the guys who do it for a living. And I always appreciate people who are willing to tell their own stories. Especially tough, intensely personal stories. Telling the hard truth is one of the highest forms of courage we can share with each other as human beings, and Brendan McDonough holds nothing back.

The author is the lone survivor of the Yarnell Hill fire that claimed the lives of his entire Hotshot team. That fact is in the title of the book because it’s human nature to be interested in that aspect of his story—it’s unique, and it’s intensely dramatic. But no tragedy should ever define a human life. One of the things I love about this book is that it shows how much more there is to Brendan McDonough.

The List by Patricia Forde

A Thought-provoking, Dystopian World

The List is a fascinating dystopian tale of a post-apocalyptic society in which language is limited to only 500 words. And falling. The leaders of Ark–a relatively save haven in the midst of chaos and wilderness–believe words are to blame for the cataclysmic Melting. Scientists and journalists used words to hide the impending global disasters behind pretty lies and false promises until it was too late.

Now, only the aging wordsmith and his young apprentice, Letta, are allowed to use words that are not on the List–collecting and protecting them until the day that humanity might once again deserve the full range of language and expression. An Adorable Holiday Slump-buster!

I was SO excited to be approved for this Disney-Hyperion title on Net Galley, and it did not disappoint!

If you’re in the mood for a fast, slump-buster read–whether to get you back into reading or to kick-start you into the holiday spirit–this is it! I loved Dylan immediately. She’s the awkward, self-conscious, shy younger sister of a beauty-pageant winner, dragged into a high-profile world she never wanted to be part of. When she ends up meeting a boy she might actually LIKE (for the first time, like, EVER), she’s forced to go through the roller coaster of first love on reality television. UGH, right???
