Highly Illogical Behavior by John Corey Whaley

Brilliant, Funny, Quirky, Engaging

Ghost Hand by Ripley Patton

Fun Thriller with a Cool Premise

Ghost Hand is a fun read with an intriguing premise. Sometime in the very near future, a rare condition develops in which people are occasionally born with “ghost” parts. The main character, Liv, has a ghost hand. She can use it in the same way anyone else uses their hand, but recently it has begun to evidence a mind of its own…

It might sound like horror, but it’s more of an action thriller. Without any spoilers, Liv has to figure out what’s going on with her hand while evading a bunch of ghost-hating bad guys, dealing with the requisite hot-guy-she-can’t-figure-out, and dodging a mother who has never been able to accept the way she was born.

Street Magicks, Edited by Paula Guran

A Lovely Collection of Slightly-Vintage Fantasy Stories

We bought this anthology at full price for our permanent collection. If nothing else, Scott Lynch is a genius, and his “A Year and a Day in Old Theradane” was worth the price of admission all by itself.

The Dragon Dreamer by J.S. Burke

A Gentle, Utopian Tale of Science and Magic

Simon Cup’s Box by A.B. Syed

Funny and Brilliant!

(A note from Erin: I stole this one out of our in-box and never gave it back. Hey, you snooze, you lose. Middle grade books go by middle grade rules. Word.)

This book wasn’t next up in my review list. I know. It wasn’t. So, here’s what happened…

I got a review copy by email. Yay! Love those! Of course, I opened it–you know, just to make sure it would open. Then I read a paragraph or two because I’m a compulsive reader, and after all, it was right there in front of me. I can’t be blamed for that. It was clearly not my fault.

An hour later, I finished it. I couldn’t put it down, which was also not my fault. I blame A.B. Syed. And, obviously, I blame Simon Cup. (It’s okay. He’s used to it.) The book made me grin like a little kid. In several places it made me laugh out loud. People looked at me oddly, yes, but I laughed out loud anyway. It’s that kind of book.
