A free fantasy for your weekend! With more giveaways coming soon!

Bound, by Kirsten Weiss

You get a book… and you get a book…

When it comes to books, it doesn’t get better than free! But we don’t recommend just any free book. (Most of the time, you get what you pay for.) So we look for titles that actually excite us. Solid writing. Good reviews. An interesting premise. And we try to cross the sci-fi/fantasy spectrum. Dystopian science one day, cozy mysteries the next. This one’s a contemporary witchy mystery with a bit of romance, in the vein of Practical Magic. We downloaded ours as soon as we found it. And then we shared it with you!

Just $1.99 each for the entire Wayward Pines trilogy! The sci-fi mystery thriller behind the TV series!

Pines, by Blake Crouch

Did you catch Wayward Pines when it was on television? If you did, what did you think? Erin loved season one (“Omg, so awesome!”), and now the books are all on sale! From now through the end of September, all three ebooks in the Wayward Pines trilogy are just $1.99 each. We love sales like this, with plenty of time to buy the first one for just $1.99 and read it, to see whether we want to snap up the other two while they’re still discounted.

We checked Netflix, by the way, and Wayward Pines isn’t on there. It’s on Amazon, but it’s not free. (Bummer.) Hulu won’t let you search anything unless you sign up (not cool!) so we don’t know about that one. Anyone want to search that for us and let us know?

These Terry Pratchett stories are 80% off through the end of September!

The Witch’s Vacuum Cleaner and Other Stories, by Terry Pratchett

“The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.” —Terry Pratchett

We’ve been dying to find a Terry Pratchett sale! One of the greatest names in fantasy humor, Terry Pratchett spent an entire lifetime writing. These particular stories were penned back at the beginning, when he was just 17. He honed them a bit for this anthology, but not much. Such was the depth of his talent. The collection is just $1.99 through the end of September, and we snapped it up the second we found it. We’ve made it a lifetime quest to keep our minds open—making sure they’ll have room for stories like these.

Three weeks until Dragon’s Code! Our countdown celebration starts today!

Okay, first things first. The ARC of Dragon’s Code by Gigi McCaffrey is here!!!!! It arrived right before DragonCon, but I wasn’t about to bring anything that precious into such a chaotic environment. No way. So I left it at home in its protective shipping envelope, and I started reading it after I recovered from my cold. I’m about 15% in, reading slowly to savor it, because I ALREADY DON’T WANT IT TO END!!!

It’s a genuine return to Pern, and I’m loving every second of it. Plus, we’re in countdown mode, people, because the actual release is THREE WEEKS FROM TODAY! I’ll share more about the read next week (don’t worry – no spoilers!) but in the meantime… here’s a $2.99 ebook from Anne McCaffrey to whet your appetite: Crystal Singer. It’s not a Pern book, but I read the whole trilogy several times and absolutely loved it!

In humanity’s space-faring future, there’s a planet with extremely precious crystals that can only be harvested by hand. “Crystal singers” literally sing to the crystals while cutting them, to keep them from shattering. The best singers can make a fortune, but there are side effects they don’t tell you about in the brochures…

Watch these Gigi McCaffrey and Anne McCaffrey posts over the next few weeks for contests and giveaways as we celebrate 50 years of Pern, and other amazing McCaffrey worlds! (Hint: click on that “Continue reading” link!)
