The Thickety first came out in 2014, followed (like clockwork) by The Whispering Trees in 2015, Well of Witches in 2016, and The Last Spell in 2017 (which was, in fact, the last spell, as it concluded the series.) So why is it on sale now, in 2018?
Because Nightbooks came out four days ago, on July 24. A book that has nothing to do with the Thickety series. What?

It’s true. Sara Raasch started writing Snow Like Ashes when she was twelve. Want proof? We hunted down a video of the author holding up the first hand-written draft and took a screenshot. She reads a page from it in the video. We’re convinced. (Isn’t she adorable, btw?)
The decade she took to build this world shows in its magic. And in its politics. We found one reviewer who wrote down all eight territories, along with their rulers and their “conduits” (i.e. special magic items), just to keep them straight. To make things even more complicated, four of the conduits can only be wielded by men, and the other four by women.
(Wait. Is that determined by biological sex or by gender identification? Dunno. We haven’t read it yet. We just now bought it on sale. That’s how we find these deals. We’re actually shopping for ourselves and then telling you about it. Probably because we don’t have enough friends.)
I’m too close to this book to introduce it. I’ll let the publisher do that down below. Instead, here’s the story of how this book turned me into a blubbering mess at Dragoncon.

Gaming. Yeah, we’ve dabbled. From Tuesday raids in World of Warcraft to Friday clan nights in Call of Duty, there’s nothing like fighting the good fight with 5 to 40 of your best friends chilling in voice chat. But if you watched any of the E3 broadcasts this year, you’ll know there are few fandoms as enthusiastic as the Gears of War crowd. Gears 5, Gears Pop!, Gears Tactics… the screams just kept coming. Gears readers will be glad to know the franchise is producing books as fast as it is gaming titles. If not faster.
Aspho Fields is the official prequel, which has us pretty stoked. We’ve always been suckers for backstory. Action and danger are so much more powerful when you’re invested in the characters, and that’s just as true for games as it is for books. Imagine how much richer the gaming experience would be if we went into it knowing the characters inside and out already. How much more thrilling the victories, and how much more heart wrenching the losses. Sounds intense, right? We think so, too, and now’s our chance to find out.
