Three weeks until Dragon’s Code! Our countdown celebration starts today!

Okay, first things first. The ARC of Dragon’s Code by Gigi McCaffrey is here!!!!! It arrived right before DragonCon, but I wasn’t about to bring anything that precious into such a chaotic environment. No way. So I left it at home in its protective shipping envelope, and I started reading it after I recovered from my cold. I’m about 15% in, reading slowly to savor it, because I ALREADY DON’T WANT IT TO END!!!

It’s a genuine return to Pern, and I’m loving every second of it. Plus, we’re in countdown mode, people, because the actual release is THREE WEEKS FROM TODAY! I’ll share more about the read next week (don’t worry – no spoilers!) but in the meantime… here’s a $2.99 ebook from Anne McCaffrey to whet your appetite: Crystal Singer. It’s not a Pern book, but I read the whole trilogy several times and absolutely loved it!

In humanity’s space-faring future, there’s a planet with extremely precious crystals that can only be harvested by hand. “Crystal singers” literally sing to the crystals while cutting them, to keep them from shattering. The best singers can make a fortune, but there are side effects they don’t tell you about in the brochures…

Watch these Gigi McCaffrey and Anne McCaffrey posts over the next few weeks for contests and giveaways as we celebrate 50 years of Pern, and other amazing McCaffrey worlds! (Hint: click on that “Continue reading” link!)

Another Monday, another free fantasy! (Plus, a huge tip for cheap audiobooks!)

Miss Mabel’s School for Girls, by Katie Cross

We’re always excited to find a great free recommendation, especially on a Monday. Even better, did you know these free reads can make the audiobook cheaper, too?

Many authors and publishers offer Audible narration at a lower price to people who have already bought the ebook. And a free download counts just like any other purchase in the Amazon system. So, to get the audiobook for a lot less than the usual price, just download the free ebook and then reload the book page. Read the stuff under the green “Read Now” button, and there will often be an Audible narration deal. Audiobooks that are usually north of $20 can often be “added” for less than $10, so even if you only read audiobooks, it still might be worth downloading that free Kindle first!

A fantastic deal on a 5-star read!

The Inexplicable Logic of My Life, by Benjamin Alire Saenz

We absolutely loved this book. “The Inexplicable Logic of My Life is a brilliant story of youth at an end, adulthood on the horizon, the meaning of family, the many faces of love, and the difficulty of knowing how to hold on while at the same time letting go.” (That’s from our 5-star review of the novel.) It’s one of those reads that just flies by, despite its 464-page length. Think of it as a cross between a journal and a memoir, written by a modern teen with an old soul. At just $2.99 for a limited time, this is one not to miss!
